Amtitha Vennai or Sowveera Kuzhambu

Amritha vennai otherwise called as Sowveera Kuzhambu is a siddha classical medicine in the form of Vennai ie, Butter. The official reference of this medicine is in Agasthyar Vaidya Kaaviyam 1500. This medicine is an external use only one.




The two ingradients of aritha vennai are
  1. Veeram - corrosive sublimate of Mercury
  2. Butter


This medicine can be used externally for ulcers, boils, carbuncles, inflammation of the anal spincter, abscesses and scrofula. After application of amritha vennai, juice of tamarind leaves boiled in Kaadi (Old Vinegar) is used to clean the ulcers

Mayana Thylam for Arthritis

Mayana Thylam is a siddha classical medicine explained in siddha Reference Therayar Thaila Vargam. This medicine is used in the treatment of arthritis, paralysis, muscular pains, nervous debility and swellings as an external medicine. This medicine is very much usefull in Rhumatoid arthritis and nuralgia.

The ingradients of this medicine are 
  1. Bee's Wax
  2. Sakkikkal - Flint stone
  3. Sotruppu -  Common salt
  4. Aatru Manal - River sand
  5. Omam - Ajowan
  6. Manjal -Turmeric
  7. Jadamanjil - Indian spikenard



This thylam is ina wax form which may be melted before use.

Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS) Siddha Management

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder affecting large intestine with a group of symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, Gas trouble, mucus in stools, Diarrhoea or some times constipation and irregular bowel habits. It will affect the quality of life severely. The reason for this disease is not clearly known. The progression of this disease is directly connected to the anxiety and stress.
No specific tests are available to detect this disease, it is diagnosed clinically. Only a small number of people with IBS have severe signs and symptoms. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress.

Management in Siddha

The management of this disease involve the life style and food modification.
Do's and Dont's : Avoid stress and anxiety. Take easily digestible food items with less salt, sour and spicy. Avoid fast food and food with preservatives. Practice mind relaxing exercises . Yoga and pranayama will be helpful. Include fruits like pomegranate and beverages like buttermilk  in daily diet.

Medication :
The following medicines can be used as single drug or as combination with the advice of a siddha physician for better results.
  1. Thayir Chundi churnam 2-5gm twice daily with butter milk.
  2. Tab. Thayir chundi 2-0-2
  3. Vilvathi Lehyam 5gm twice daily after food.
  4. Padikaara Chendooram 200mg Twice daily with Honey.
  5. Kariveppilai Kudineer 60ml with butter milk twice daily before food.
  6. Sangu Parpam 200mg twice daily with Honey.
  7. Annabedi chendooram 120 mg with Honey twice daily After food.
If constipation Present :

  1. Nilavagai churnam 5 gm at bed time with Hot water
  2. Tab. Nilavarai Churnam 2 at bed time
If Diarrhoa Present :
  1. Kabada Mathirai SOS
  2. Thayir Chundi churnam 2-5gm twice daily with butter milk.

Ashta Bhairavam for Fevers

Ashta Bhairavam is a classical siddha herbo-mineral preparation explained in Siddha vaidya thirattu. 
It is used in the treatment of various fevers. This medicine will also produce purgative action. The main ingredients of this medicine are

  9. Long Pepper (Piper longum)(Thippili,  Magadhi)
  10. Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum(Milaku Maricha)

  12. Cloves – Lavangam
  13. Purified Croton Seed Cotyledons - Nervalam
  14. Lime Juice
  15. Breast Milk

This medicine is given in a dose of 1 pill only once in a day preferably in the morning with suitable adjuvants like honey. the purgation produced by this medicine can be stopped by giving lemon juice or Butter milk.

Kuppai meni or Indian Acalypha as a food and medicine

Kuppaimeni is a herb available in our surrounding. According to the Sanskrit texts it’s named as ‘Marjala mohini’. This herb iss widely used in siddha system of medicine for treatment of various diseases.

BOTANICAL NAME: Acalypha indica

SYNONYMS:   Arimanjari, Poonaivanangi, Meni

PARTS USED: Leaves, Roots, Whole plant

TASTE: Bitter, Pungent

ACTIONS:       Anodyne (A medicine that gives relief from pain), Anthelmintic, Cathartic, Diuretic, Emetic, Expectorant, Emmenagogue.                

USES:

1.      Kuppaimeni can be taken along with our food or as our food which prevents Vatha  complaints. (Thimir vatham)

2.      Leaf juice / Decoction (Kudineer)  can be given to children in a dose of 4-16 ml according to the age and  for adults 15-30 ml. It will acts as purgative and emetic, will remove phlegm in the chest and cure worm infestation

3.      Leaf powder 950 – 1300mg is taking it cures respiratory problems like cough.

4.      Leaf mixed with salt / Turmeric, grind and applied on the scabies & itching part.

5.      It is mixed with salt and juice is extracted. This can be used for in the treatment of Psychiatric illness.

6.      It can be used as a Kalpa medicine. It is said that it has ‘Gold’ element in it.

7.      Leaves are put in the heated castor oil and taken. This can be taken for ‘1 mandalam as Kalpa medicine. This removes kapha complaints along with vatham, gives body strength.

8.      Roots are grinded into a paste and given in a dose of Areca nut seed size mixed with water for 3 days to remove rat poison.(Note:   Salt restricted diet.)

It produce vomiting and purgation.

9.      Leaf juice can be applied on forehead for headache.

10.  Leaf is grinded and rolled as a small ball can be used for enema.

11.  Leaf powder can be applied on bed sores to kill the germs.

Kabha Jwara Kudineer to Improve immunity against Viral Diseases

The textual reference of this siddha medicine is Siddha Vaidya Thirattu. This medicine is in coarse powder form which is used to make decoction. This is widely used in siddha for the management of fever, especially fever with cold and respiratory symptoms.

VENPOOSANI NEY FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH

Venpoosani Nei is a ghee praparation in Siddha Medicine. The rafferance text of this medicine is Agasthiyar Vaidya Rethna Churukkam. This medicine consist of about 18 herbal ingredients, milk, sugar candy and ghee. The main ingredient is Ash Gourd Fruit (Benincasa hispida). This medicine is also Known as 'Koozh Paanda Gritham'

 

The dasage of this medicine is 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (3-5 gm) twice daily for 45 days. This effective in Leucorrhoea, colic, Diseases of tongue, leprosy, Vaginal carcinoma, Urethritis, Emaciation of body, Chronic diarrhoea etc

This medicine is highly effective in venereal diseases when taken along with Abraka Parpam.

For leucorrhoea, this medicine can be given with Kalnar parpam, Kungiliya parpam, Parangipattai churnam, Rasagandhi Mezhugu, Kadaleekalpa rasayanam etc for better results.

For Emaciation of body, this medicine can be given along with Amukura lehyam, Silasath parpam, Thetran kottai lehyam etc.

MATHTHAN THYLAM FOR NON HEALING WOUNDS

Maththan Thylam is a siddha Oil preparation intended to apply externally for Eczema, itching and Ulcers. The preparation method and its usage are explained in Siddha Formulary of India Part 1. This medicine is otherwise called as "Pachchai Ennai"or Oomathai Thylam . The main ingradients of this medicine are Datura leaf juice, coconut oil and Copper sulphate (Mayil Thutham)

This medicine can also be used to instill in ears for ear diseases. For wheeping Eczema and putrid ulcers this can be applied externally. For non healing ulcers this can be applied as a bandage. For Non healing ulcers and Diabetic wounds other siddha internal medicines like Seenthil Churnam, Annabedi chenduram, Naga Parpam, Muthuchippi Parpam etc can be used with the advice of a siddha physician for better results.

FATTY LIVER SIDDHA REMEDY

Fatty liver otherwise known as hepatic steatosis is the fatty infiltration in liver cells. It happens when fat builds up in the liver. Having small amounts of fat in your liver is normal but liver is considered fatty if more than 5% of it is fat.

Symptoms

In many cases, fatty liver causes no noticeable symptoms. Sometimes feeling of tiredness or experience discomfort or pain in the upper right side of your abdomen may occur.

Reason for Fatty Liver

The main reason for the fatty liver is the increased production of fat in the body or improper metabolism of fat in the liver. This build-up of fat can be caused by a variety of things. For example, drinking too much alcohol can cause alcoholic fatty liver disease. This is the first stage of alcohol-related liver disease. In addition to this, Obesity, Diabetes, High level of cholesterol, especially triglycerides in blood etc causes fatty liver. Some liver infections like Hepatitis C and continuous usage of some medicines may also cause fatty liver.

Complications

·         Too much fat in your liver can cause liver inflammation, which can damage your liver and create scarring. This is also known as Liver Fibrosis. In severe cases, this scarring/ Fibrosis can lead to liver failure.
  • ·         If One develop severe liver fibrosis, it’s known as cirrhosis, which is a potentially life-threatening condition.
  • ·         The Symptoms of Cirrhosis are

  • o   Loss of appetite
  • o   Weight loss
  • o   Weakness
  • o   Fatigue
  • o   Nosebleeds
  • o   Itchy skin
  • o   Yellow skin and eyes
  • o   Web-like clusters of blood vessels under the skin (spider nevus)
  • o   Abdominal pain
  • o   Abdominal swelling (ascites)
  • o   Odema in legs
  • o   Breast enlargement in men
  • o   Confusion
  • ·         When fatty liver develops in someone who drinks a lot of alcohol, it’s known as alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD).
  • ·         In someone who doesn’t drink a lot of alcohol, it’s known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Siddha Management

According to siddha this disease is characterized by the increased Iyyam (Kapha Humor) in the seat of Pitha. So medicines and food with taste of bitter and pungent tastes are advised. Any  one or combination The following medicines can be taken with the advise of a siddha physician.

  1. Pitha Jwara Kudineer 30-60 ml twice daily before food.
  2. Seenthil Churnam 2-3 gm daily with Honey after food.
  3. Tab. Keezhanelli 2 tab thrice daily.
  4. Karisalai Churnam 2-3 gm daily with Honey after food.
  5. Karisaaliadi Pachakarpam 1-2 gms with honey 2-3 times a day before food.
  6. Mandooradi Adai Kudineer 30-45 ml twice daily before food.
In addition to this medicines several other medicines like annabhedi chendooram, ayakantha chendooram, Pidangunaari kudineer, etc can also be given in this condition.

Food Regimen



If Diabetes is there, strict food control for the diabetes should be followed. Prefer vegetarian and fat free diet. Take more quantity of water. Food items like goose berries, pomegranate, dates, tender coconut etc are advisable. Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, sour food items, milk, sweet items, carbohydrate rich food items, and  oily foods. Do proper excercise.

VEDI ANNABHEDI CHENDURAM FOR ANAEMIA AND LIVER DISEASES

Vedi annabedi chendooram or Annabedi chendooram no 2 is a classical siddha medicinal preparation. The textual reference of this medicine is Siddha Vaidya Thirattu. The main ingredients of this medicine are purified green vitreol (Annabhedi) and Purified Potassium Nitrate (Vediyuppu)
The usual dosage of this medicine is 100 to 200 mg twice daily with Honey. By taking this medicine in correct dosage and adjuvent it will cure Anaemia and Jaundice.
This medicine is very famous for its diuretic and hepato protective action.

KUNGILIYA PARPAM for Urinary problems and Leucorrhoea

Kungiliya Parpam or Kungiliya Bhasmam is a herbal siddha medicine. The textual reference for this medicine is Siddha Vaidya Thirattu.
The main ingredient of this medicine is Venkungiliyam ( Shorea robusta )The dosage of this medicine is 200 to 500 mg twice daily with ghee, butter or tender coconut water. CHANDAMARUTHA CHENDURAM for Arthritis and hemiplegia

Chandamarutha chendooram is a high potential siddha medicine. The textual reference of this medicine is siddha vaidya thirattu. This medicine is given in very small doses and with proper monitoring of an expert siddha physician only. The doage of this medicine is 30-60mg 5 gB.D with Thrikadugu choornam, honey , Ginger juice or Palm Jaggery . 

The ingredients of this medicine are 
  1. Purified Cinnabar (Purified Lingam)
  2. Purified Calomel (Purified Pooram)
  3. Purified Corrosive sublimate ( Purified Veeram)
  4. Purified Sulfur ( Purified Gandhagam)
  5. Purified red sulphide of mercury (Purified Rasa Chendooram)
This medicine is used in the treatment of chronic diseases including cancer. This is given with Thrikadugu churnam for Arthritis, Hemi plegia and Paralysis. It is also very beneficial in treating sexually transmitted diseases, and vernal diseases. 
This medicine can be given with palm jaggery in a dose of 65mg twice daily after food for 48 days ( in a manner of 7 days medicine and 5 days break ) for Rhumatoid arthritis, this treatment proved to be reducing serum rheumatoid factor  significantly. While taking this medicine strict diet regimen should be followed.

Chundai Vatral Churnam for Indiagestion and Diarrhoea

Chundai Vatral Churnam is a poly herbal siddha medicine used in the treatment of indiagestion and diarrhoea. The textual referance of this medicine is Theraiyar Karisal 300 and Siddha formulary of India Part 1. 
The usual dosage of this medicine is 1-2 gm twice daily. This can be given with Buffalow milk curd for better results.  The ingredients of this medicine are

  1. Chundaivattral (Dry Fruit epicarp of Solanam torvum), Brihati
  2. Karuveppilai (Leaf of Murraya koenigii), kaidarya
  3. Maamparuppu ( Seed of Mangifera indica), Chootabeeja   
  4. Omam (Seed of Trachyspermum ammi) Ajamoda

BENEFITS OF THRIPHALA CHURNAM

THRIPHALA CHURNAM is a multi-herbal formulation in siddha medicine. It is also famous and time- tested for its action. 'Tribhala' is a wonderous combination of the pericarps of three officinal tender fruits. The therapeutic applications of this effective combination is far beyond compare. It rejuvenates the body in total. It tones the bowel and restores its normal functions. Aiding expectoration, it clears the respiratory tract. It regularizes the bowel movements.


The ingredients of this medicine are 
1. Indian Goose Berry (Emblica officinalis), Nellivattral , Amlaki
2. Belliric myrobalan (Terminalia belerica), Thandrikkaithol, Bibhitaki
chebulic myrobalan(Terminalia chebula)Kadukkai Thol, Abhaya

Thriphala churnam is astringent, Laxative, and anti bacterial. It relieves constipation. It can be used as an adjuvent for several siddha medicines like Annabedhi chenduram, Aya chenduram, Naga parpam, etc for differant diseases like Anaemia, Abdominal pain, Piles etc. 
The decoction of Thriphala churnam is used to wash the wounds and skin lesions, this decoction can also be used to wash the face to reduce the pimples in patients with oily skin and to gargle to to cure the oral aphtous ulcers.
An oil prepared by adding coconut oil with thriphala and placing it in sunlight for a time period called Thriphala suryapuda thylam  is highlt beneficial in treating skin diseases. 
Thriphala churnam in a dose of 1-2 gm with equal quantity of honey and ghee is a rejuvanator for eyes.

FISSURE FOOT TREATMENT IN SIDDHA

Cracked heels or fissure foot is a simple cosmetic problem or a nuisance but it may lead to serious health problems and secondary infections. Causes of fissure foot are : living in a dry climate, obesity, consistently walking barefoot or wearing sandals or open-backed shoes, and inactive sweat glands in the foot. The complication are increased depth of the fissure and infections. Diabetic patients with fissure foot should give more care to heal it fast.

Treatment

  • Cleaning and Moisturizing the heel is the first line of treatment
  • Avoid going barefoot or wearing open-backed shoes, sandals or shoes with thin soles.
  • Gently scrub to remove the thick and flaky skin in the foot.
  • Moisturize the foot with suitable medicated ointments or oil.

  1. Kilinjal Mezhuku - Can aplly externally with castor oil in the affected areas.
  2. Vanga vennai - Applied externally after washing with Thriphala Decoction.
  3. Thriphala Churnam - For Washing Use as Decoction

Internal Medicines

  1. Parangi Pattai churnam - 2-3 gm twice Daily with ghee. After Food
  2. Sivanar Vembu churnam 2-3 gm twice daily with Ghee, After Food
  3. Parangi Rasayanam - 5gm with milk Twice Daily After Food.
  4. Sivanar Vembu Kuzhi Thylam 5 to 7 drops with milk twice daily.

The above said medicines can be used for the treatment of fissure foot as single medicine or as combinations as per the instructions from a qualified siddha medical practitioner.

LINGA CHENDURAM for fever, skin diseases and veneral diseases

The only one ingredient of this medicine is Purified Cinnabar. The purified Cinnabar is processed in Colocynth plant juice ( Aattruthummatti Juice). The process of preparation and its uses in various diseases are explained in siddha text Bhogar Vaidyam - 700.
This medicine is used in the treatment of various types of fevers, skin diseases and veneral diseases. The dosage of this medicine is 50 to 100 mg twice daily with honey. This medicine can be given with Thrikadugu choornam and honey for common fevers. For arthritis complains this can be given with amukkura churnam and honey.

THRIKADUGU CHURNAM

Thrikaduku Churnam is a classical siddha medicine in powder form. The text reference of this medicine is Siddha formulary of India Part 1 and Agasthyar Paripooranam 400. There are three ingradients in this powder that are 
1. Dry Ginger (Zingiber Officinale)(Chukku,  Sunthi)
2. Long Pepper (Piper longum)(Thippili,  Magadhi)
3. Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum(Milaku Maricha)
Dosage of this medicine is 1-2 gm with honey twice daily.

The usage of this medicine is vast. It is  digestive, carminative, expetorant, Febrifuge and antiperiodic. It can be used in Decreased Appetite, Abdominal Discomfort, indigestion, flatulence Dyspepsia, Vomiting and intermittent fevers. For cough and bronchitis it can be taken with sugar or honey. In drowsiness small quantity of the powder is mixed with clean water and dropped in nostrils. It can be used as an adjuvent for several siddha preparations like chandamarutha chendooram, arumugha chenduram etc. For scrotal swelling this medicine can be used with another siddha medicines like Kalarchi choornam and Abraga Chendooram. The researches on this medicine shows its promising anthelminthic activity too.
